History

For many years, the city has been taking steps to identify and reduce it's carbon footprint as well as identify opportunities to realize energy efficiencies.

Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory

After passing the Cities for Climate Protection Resolution (No. 18-2007, attached to Inventory) and joining the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives, the city partnered with the Frankfort Electric and Water Plant Board in 2007 to document the carbon footprint of the city as a whole. The Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory provides a summary of findings and recommendations.

Environmental Sustainability Assessment Report

As a follow-up to the Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory, the city conducted an energy audit. The 2010 Environmental Sustainability Report identifies on-site opportunities to reduce energy usage and waste generation, and lower operating expenses at City Hall. Some of the improvements implemented include:

  • Replacing T12 lighting with T5 lighting (most municipal buildings)
  • Installation of programmable thermostats
  • Upgrade HVAC system at City Hall (<90% efficient)
